Law Firm Giving Back to Louisiana Heroes

This past Saturday, the GCJ team had the wonderful opportunity to honor the 2018 recipients of the Louisiana Heroes’ Scholarship. This scholarship program is brand new and was founded by our very own Scott J. Chafin, Jr. The fund was created to provide financial aid to the children of Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Educators in Louisiana. Scott reflects on why he was inspired to start this scholarship program: “I’ve always wanted to find a way to give people a head start, give them a leg up before any tragedy or injury strikes.”  With his dad’s career in law enforcement and his mom’s time as a teacher, Scott knew exactly what he wanted the scholarship to be.

After long deliberation over who the 5 recipients would be, the committee chose these five outstanding and well-deserving candidates:
Alexandra Harp, Anna Kate Semmes, Creighton France, Katie Black, and Spencer Favor.

The recent banquet was held at Wine Country Bistro where everyone involved in the scholarship was able to personally meet and congratulate the winners and their families. All five students received a certificate in their honor, along with the $2,500 donated toward their college tuition. They each gave a short speech about their own “Louisiana Hero” and how they had been inspired by that person throughout the years. The students showed immense gratitude for our support, but this event enabled us to show how grateful we are to these bright young minds and their dedication to their studies as well as their larger communities.

At the close of the evening, Scott made a big announcement about his plans for the scholarship in the future. GCJ will now donate a percentage of every case the firm handles to the Louisiana Heroes’ Scholarship Fund. Scott made it clear that what we all want is for Louisiana’s students to put their best foot forward when they start their higher education. Everyone at the firm has been incredibly supportive of Scott’s vision for the scholarship fund. We hope the scholarship will grow in the years to come so that we can award more scholarships for more money to deserving students around our great state!

The firm gives special recognition for the success of the scholarship fund to the following Louisiana Hero Partners, who have donated to the fund.
